Susanville California is the home of Sagebrush Ranch Horse Association. They are a club dedicated to the working ranch horse and cow horse. Sagebrush Ranch Horse Association hosts various activities beginning in March and continue through mid-October. Activities include clinics, trail rides, ranch horse challenges, trail trials and ranch sorting.
Trail Trials challenge both rider and horse as they face many obstacles over a 100 acre course. The event ends with lunch and prizes are awarded for the winners.
Ranch Sorting is a two person team and eleven cows. The cows are numbered zero through nine, with one unmarked cow. The cows are sorted in numerical order from one pen to the opposite pen, starting with the number called out by the timer.
SRHA also hosts riding clinics. The weekend of April 23 – 24, I had the honor of photographing a “Reining Clinic” taught by Martin Padilla. Martin is the owner of Padilla Performance Horses, located in Galt California. He is a successful National Reining Horse Association showman, trainer and coach.
The photographs from the Reining Clinic can be seen here.
